Staying at the Farm

Our farm is located on the western flank of the Turtleback Mountain Preserve and is surrounded by hundreds of acres of pristine forest, wetlands and rugged coastline. There are extensive trails and secluded roads for hiking, mountain biking, and riding, a large freshwater lake that is ideal for swimming, and many scenic spots for picnicking.

From our farm, guests may hike up to the summit of Turtlehead Mountain where there are spectacular views of the surrounding San Juan Islands, coastal mountain ranges and Canadian Gulf Islands or access the public trails on the Turtleback Mountain Preserve. Many guests enjoy hiking out to the salt water coastline where they can spot seal, porpoise and occasionally otters and Orca whales.

The farm has a resident herd of riding horses and several draft horses. Guests may book a guided trail ride. Lunch rides can be arranged with advance notice. While we do not offer a structured Farm Stay program, we do welcome our guests to join us in our daily activities.

Explore the property by foot, bike, or horse to seek peaceful places to enjoy some solitude, swim, picnic, soak up the sun, read, or simply do nothing at all.

About Our Guest Cabin

Our guest cabin overlooks Turtlehead Farm with its organic garden, Gambrel roof barn, fields and large pond. Across the pond there is a working sawmill and blacksmith shop.

Our rustic hewn log cabin accommodates two to four people comfortably. The cabin is 875 square feet and has an open living, dining and kitchen area, heated by a Vermont Casting wood stove and electric baseboard heaters.

The cabin has one bedroom with a queen size bed; two small twin size beds can be added for children and small adults. The living room has a queen size comfortable sofa bed. The kitchen has a 24″ Miele oven, two burner electric cooktop and a Majestic wood-burning cookstove. There is one full bath with a clawfoot tub, pedestal sink and a separate shower. A laundry room with deep sink, washer and dryer and storage is available as well.

The kitchen is fully stocked with utensils, dishware and linens. Appliances include: older 20” Subzero built in frig and freezer, 36” extra frig on back porch, 24” Miele oven, two burner electric cooktop, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker and a Majestic wood-burning stove.

Every aspect of Turtlehead Farm and the cabin is imbued with hospitality and comfort. From the gracious host Ellen and her family to the horses to the warmth of the woodstove and the deep clawfoot tub, this log cabin on a grassy knoll has provided us with a base camp from which to strike out on adventures around the island or simply straight out the back door. Donkeys braying, bunnies hanging out on the porch, Fjord ponies chasing each other and the most comfortable night’s sleep we’ve ever had…life in the cabin is splendidly simple and satisfying.
